Yo Mama’s Bar and Grill — Late Night and Great

A simple detour off of Bourbon right onto Saint Peter will get you there in a flash. Right across from Preservation Hall. You know where that is right?

Yo Mama’s Bar and Grill is not family-friendly fare.  This is a night owl spot for those that partied a little too hard on Bourbon Street and are looking for a late-night respite.  Or for anyone that wants the best of the best when it comes to a New Orleans burger.

This is a bar.  Don’t expect a five-star restaurant, and wear whatever you like.  It’s a conventional bar atmosphere, New Orleans-style.  A straight shot to the back with a couple of booths and of course, the bar.  Don’t even try to wander in and use the restroom.  You should know better if you are roaming the streets of New Orleans.  Be prepared to buy a drink at least if you wish to use the facilities.  But do yourself a favor and sit down for a mouth-watering burger with so many options that there is no way you cannot find something that catches your fancy.

Shhh! A glimpse at the menu right there on the table for your viewing pleasure.

While it is a bar, and you can expect the usual clientele, especially late at night, the staff is excellent.  They will assist you from the moment you walk in and help you make those grave decisions, like whether you want your burger covered in bacon and cheddar or mushrooms.  The options go on and on here, all with a burger theme.  You can get a “Royal Mounted Burger” which sports some smoked ham, or get the underground favorite “Peanut Butter Burger.”  Yes, it is just what it sounds like, and yes it is delicious.

We have tried to replicate Yo Mama’s burger taste at home for years now.  To no avail.  We have come to the conclusion it is the grill itself that is the difference.  While we might not wish to be a fly on the wall in the kitchen, the bottom line is that this is an excellent burger, no matter what you pick, and available late to help give that alcohol slush something to dissolve into.  Just remember that this is not for the weary of heart.  Don’t tackle a Chili Cheese Burger when a plain Jane would have sufficed.  Or go for it?  You are on vacation and in the food capital of the world, or at least the northern hemisphere.

There were rumors that change-ups in the staff and chefs caused things to slow down or not quite be the same.  Our observations are that Yo Mama’s is full speed ahead.  Don’t miss out on this late night spot for some excellent grub.

OUR PICK:  The Mushroom Burger with a Loaded Baked Potato (probably more than adequate for two to share, but why not get two anyway?)

The Bacon Burger in all its glory, with a loaded baked potato and some choice beverages.
